When the boys were very young Aldous moved the family out to Vancouver in 1945 where the winters were much easier than on a farm on the Prairies. Β Aldous spent the summers in Vermillion with the plan to spend the winters in Vancouver but some plans donβt always work out. AsΒ the years went by their marriage floundered.
Now that Kathleen was on her own with the 2 boys her Father assisted in the purchase of a rooming house on west 11th avenue where she eked out a living renting rooms and raised Gary and Colin on her own.
For many years the boys traveled by train to spend part of the summer with their father in Vermilion. A special delight was staying with the Kinghorns on their farm north of Wainwright.
Two subsequent marriages did not endure. Kathleen took the name Garrard from her marriage to Norman Garrard.

π 1970 – We moved to Victoria where I was hired by the Dept. of Ethnology at the Royal British Columbia Museum. We lived on our boat in Vic. harbour for the year before we set off fishing.
π The fishing on the west coast then took up our lives for almost the next 10 years. Salmon fishing of course.

π» I’m in the stern of boat tied up at a dock on the west coast.

π 1980 – Sold the boat, did a little carpentry work here and there (built a house for a friend), bought our house in Roberts Creek
π» 1981 – headed off to the College of the Redwoods Fine Furniture Programme in Fort Bragg, CA. under the tutelage of the great designer and woodworker Jim Krenov. Just by chance I happened to meet someone who had taken some cabinetmaking courses from James Krenov in Mendocino, CA in the late 70’s and was thrilled by the experience. I made contact with the organizer and he said that a year long program was being initiated in 1981 and if I was interested I had better get my application in real quick. I did and two weeks later I was accepted.

π I had very little background in ‘fine woodworking’ and learned later that I was accepted due to my enthusiasm and that I was the only non American citizen in the programme of 22 students. The programme is still very robust and in those 36 years some very fine furniture makers have been let loose in the world.
π We were there a year and Bronwyn was born before the term ended.
π» 1982 – Came home in the summer with our baby, set up shop and started a career in furniture and cabinet making.

π 1982 – I got cracking on building a shop for a furniture making career that lasted well into the 21st century. I also built a residence above the shop for Aldous to use when he and his fishing pals visited these parts once or twice a year.
π When Ardith and I separated in 1989/90 (we have remained good friends ever since) I moved up there and we are able to keep our property and share the upbringing of Bronwyn.
π 1990 – Stacia and I got together in ’90. We lived above the woodshop and Ardith and Bronwyn lived in our old home on the front of the property until we sold the property when Stacia and I moved into our Cohousing in 2004 after 5 or so years of organizing and preparation.
π·πΉ What is Cohousing πΉπ·
Cohousing is a type of intentional community where residents typically get together to create a community. The concept arose in Denmark in the 1960’s and there are hundreds of cohousing communities in Denmark as well as many other countries around the world, particularly the US and Canada.
With 31 homes and 70 members of all ages and backgrounds we have created a small closely knit village like atmosphere where we share 2 or 3 meals a week in our common house and in fact share many other things as well: tools, vehicles, you name it. Not for everyone but we feel quite privileged to be here.
π·πΉ Welcome to our Cohousing VillageπΉπ·

π» My first chair is part of a dining set I made.

π» Any many, many kitchens which most cabinet makers start out with.

π» My first real test as a craftsman. Curved doors, glass, dovetailed drawers, you name it.

π» I collaborated with several woodworkers, particularly Bradley Hunt from Bella Bella (Heiltsuk Nation), we did many pieces together.

π»I was very much influenced by Oriental style and this Tansu cabinet represents that, based on ancient Japanese storage chests. I made many of them.

π» A potlatch chest for young Bella Bella chief giving his first potlatch. Painting by Bradley Hunt.

π» The Vidar Chair. I hadn’t made a chair since the early ’80’s and tackled a set of these chairs which was the most demanding project of my career.

π» This is a Shoji boat – The hull is covered in nylon which makes the 12′ sailboat/rowing boat very light: 40 lbs which allows me to put it on the car myself, with a little bit of a struggle of course. I called it “Shoji” as it reminds me of Japanese shoji screens of which I have made many over the years for clients and our home as well.

π» An old geezer and a horse riding with some pals in the mountains of the Chilcotin. I just put this one in there for a laugh.

π» My fishing career came around once again in the shape of two childrens books. One of the great pleasures of my life, once again a collaboration with a great illustrator Kim la Fave

π Now you get to meet my daughter Bronwyn and her family π

πΆπ·πΆ Who is Bronwyn πΆπ·πΆ
π I went from pre school into the French Immersion program, grades 1 – 8, graduating high school in 2000.
π I did a ‘gap year’ traveling to Samoa, New Zealand (worked here for a while), Australia and Thailand.
π 2002 – 2003 – one year of general studies at Capilano University in Vancouver.
π 2003 – 2005 – two year publishing course at Langara College
π 2007 – 2011 – I lived in Guadalahara and Mexico City where I taught English language to elementary school kids at Christel House in Mexico City.
π The school is one of a series of schools set up by an American businesswoman, Christel de Haan, to provide education for children in Mexico City, India, Jamaica, South Africa and Indianapolis US. Free education for k-12 children from families with little or no income.
π Many of my students lived in one room shacks in Mexico City favelas where there were very few facilities. Substance abuse and prostitution were a common theme in the families, many of which were single parent families.
π I began teaching English but could not speak Spanish so it was challenging for me to teach the kids however I soon became fluent with my background in French immersionΒ and the tutoring from the children.Β
π Daniela, one of my students in one of these pictures, visited me and my family a couple of weeks ago. She is now 17 and well on her way.
π» Here are a few photos of the kids in my class at Christel House School in Mexico city.

π 2011 – 2012 – BCIT one year of graphic design
π I am now the communications manager at PLAN (Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network) which is non-profitΒ organization founded in 1989 toΒ help families secure the future for loved ones with disabilities.

πΆπ·πΆπ· Colin π·πΆπ·πΆ
Colin was born in Vermilion on June 17, 1943. Family lore has it that he was born in a taxi on the way to the hospital and that his love of cars all his life is attributed to the location of his birth. Not surprising he drove taxi for quite a number of years as well as other car related pursuits.
Early on he developed quite an interest in snakes, particularly Boa Constrictors and it was not uncommon to see him wandering down the street with his boa wrapped around his shoulders. He was ordered off a train when the conductor discovered he had a snake in his baggage. He spoke of his desire to become a Herpetologist.
He graduated from King Ed High in 1961 and worked for Murry Goldman Menswear for a few years before driving taxi and embarking upon a small business of ‘detailing’ cars and doing some ‘curbside’ selling of Jaguar and Mercedes automobiles. He loved fine clothes and expensive automobiles.
In the mid 1960’s he became interested in the eastern philosophies of Krishnamurti and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (transcendental meditation) and others. Colin was a seeker which led him into experimenting with psychotropic drugs such as LSD etc. He felt a deep connection with George Harrison of the Beatles band and traveled to London to connect with George and even visited him at his home. It seemed that his pursuit of enlightenment did not address his inner demons and he gravitated to addictive drugs in an attempt to deal with his struggles. He became addicted to the opioid in the prescription cough suppressant Novahistex and he battled with addiction until the end of his life at the age of 49 in 1993.
Colin had many fine qualities and he was a gifted artist and musician (slide guitar) all of which were stifled by his substance abuse. His pursuit of illegal drugs and his untimely death from Aids were the cause of profound sorrow for his family, particularly Mom who loved him deeply and was devoted to him until he died.
